Citywide Fire Hydrant Flow Testing

Event Date:
Wednesday - July 16, 2025 - 6am to Tuesday - August 19, 2025 - 3pm

UPDATE -August 19, 2025- Citywide fire hydrant flow testing is now complete! Thank you for your patience and cooperation as our team worked to complete this essential maintenance!

The Waupun Utilities' Water Department will begin citywide fire hydrant flow testing on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. This program ensures fire hydrants are fully operational and helps maintain high water quality by removing accumulated sediment.

Purpose of the Program

The primary purpose of this program is to verify proper operation of the city’s fire hydrants through regular inspections, flow testing, and preventive maintenance.

Secondarily, flushing improves water quality by removing iron and manganese mineral deposits from the water lines. These minerals can cause discoloration, unpleasant taste, and aesthetic issues in drinking water.

Testing Schedule

  • Start Date: Wednesday, July 16, 2025

  • Estimated End Date: Early September

  • Testing Schedule:

    • Monday–Thursday: 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM

    • Friday: 6:30 AM – 10:00 AM

What to Expect

During flushing, you may observe:

  • Water running in the streets

  • A drop in water pressure

  • Discolored or cloudy tap water

Discolored water is not a health risk but may:

  • Stain laundry

  • Taste unpleasant if consumed

What to Do if You See Discolored Water

  • Run cold water from an outdoor hose bib or your bathtub faucet for about 5 minutes, or until the water clears

  • Do not use hot water, flush toilets, or run laundry until the water is clear

  • Ensure all discolored water is flushed from your home’s plumbing and hot water heater before use

Recommendation: Delay doing laundry during testing hours to avoid possible staining.
