Lead Awareness and Customer-Owned Water Service Line Materials

Important Information Regarding Customer-Owned Water Service Lines

Waupun Utilities is committed to providing safe drinking water to all customers. As part of our ongoing efforts to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Federal Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR), we are working to identify the materials used in customer-owned water service lines and notify customers if their lines contain lead, galvanized material, or have an unknown material status.

What You Need to Know:

  1. Why We Are Sending Letters:
  • Under the EPA's revised regulations, all public water systems in Wisconsin must submit an initial Service Line Materials Inventory to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

  • As part of this compliance effort, Waupun Utilities is notifying affected customers about the materials used in their customer-owned water service lines.

  • If your service line contains lead, galvanized material (recommended replacement), or has an unknown material status, you will receive a targeted notification letter from us.

  • If your service line contains lead or galvanized material, it is recommended that you take steps to reduce exposure to lead in drinking water. You may also choose to replace your service line at your own expense. 
    • Waupun Utilities is exploring funding opportunities, but none are available at this time. We will update the website as more information becomes available.
  • If your service line material is unknown, we encourage you to identify your service material by following this link. No Concerns with Waupun Utilities' Service Lines

It's important to note that Waupun Utilities’ service lines and the water we provide are safe. If any lead or galvanized service lines are present, they are on the customer-owned side of the system. Our utility system is compliant with all regulatory requirements, and this initiative helps ensure that every customer has the information they need to reduce any potential risks associated with lead exposure.

Galvanized pipe is typically on the customer-owned section of the service line.
