The Power of Community

Tree Trimming Program

Waupun Utilities performs annual tree trimming to help maintain a safe and reliable electric system. Trees and branches that grow too close to power lines are one of the leading causes of power outages. Regular trimming helps prevent service interruptions, protects equipment, and keeps our community’s electric service dependable.

Tree maintenance is also a requirement of the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, which regulates electric utilities and establishes reliability standards.

Why Tree Trimming is Important

Trees growing near power lines can create several problems:

  • Power outages caused by branches contacting lines during storms or high winds
  • Damage to utility equipment that can lead to extended service disruptions
  • Service reliability issues as trees continue to grow into power lines

By proactively trimming trees, we help reduce outages and maintain reliable electric service for our customers.

Our Approach

Our crews and contractors follow industry standards to maintain safe distances between trees and power lines. Personnel performing this work are trained in utility line clearance trimming practices and appropriate pruning techniques.

Trimming protects utility equipment while promoting the overall health and structure of trees.

When hiring a professional tree contractor, Waupun Utilities can assist by removing limbs near power lines, allowing a tree to be safely taken down without disrupting electric service. In some cases, our crews may temporarily drop lines to enable safe removal.

What to Expect

Most trimming occurs during winter months, when frozen yards allow crews to access areas without disrupting lawns.

The trimming will typically look the most noticeable immediately after the work is completed, but over time—especially during the growing season—trees naturally fill back in and regain a fuller appearance. This work is different from ornamental pruning used for landscaping. It may look more aggressive than typical yard pruning.

Our goal is always to balance electric reliability with maintaining healthy, resilient trees.

Planting Trees Near Power Lines

When planting new trees, selecting the right tree for the right location helps prevent future trimming and supports the long-term health of the tree. Property owners should avoid planting tall-growing trees directly beneath or near overhead power lines.

Before planting a tree or beginning any digging project, be sure to contact Diggers Hotline by dialing 811 or visiting diggershotline.com. This free service will mark underground utility lines to help prevent damage and reduce the risk of injury from striking buried infrastructure.
