Water Service Lines - Determine Pipe Material

The United States Environmental Protection Agency has a step-by-step guide to help people identify pipes in their homes. The guide can be found here: Protect Your Tap: A Quick Check for lead

Illustration of a service line connecting from a house to the main water line with possible sources of lead. Copper pipe with lead solder made or installed before 1986 contained high levels of lead. A service line that is lead can be a major source of lead contamination in water. Fixtures inside your home may contain lead. Lead particles can attach to the surface of galvanized pipes. Over time, the particles can enter your drinking water, causing elevated lead levels. Goose necks and pigtails are shorter pipes that connect the lead service line to the main and can contain lead.
